Inter Faith Relations Reference Group

The Methodist Church/United Reformed Church Inter Faith Relations Reference Group

As part of the initiative to work ecumenically, in 2009 the Methodist Inter Faith Reference Group and the United Reformed Church Inter Faith Group were succeeded by a joint Methodist/URC Inter Faith Reference Group.

The Methodist members of the Inter Faith Relations Reference Group are: 

David MusgraveThe Revd David Musgrave (co-chair)

David is a Methodist presbyter currently serving in the Lambeth Circuit, where he is involved in a number of inter faith contacts including the managing committee of Faiths Together in Lambeth.  He is inter faith co-ordinator for the London District.

He travelled widely during his previous career in the diplomatic service and has a lifelong passion for encountering and embracing the 'Other' in cultural and linguistic as well as in faith terms. Earlier inter faith experiences have included conversations with Sikhs in Southall and living on the Christian-Muslim encounter line in Nigeria.

David participated in the Cambridge Co-exist Leadership programme in 2013, bringing together faith leaders from Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities. He represents the Methodist Church in a number of inter faith fora including the Inter Faith Network.  

Julian BondJulian Bond

Former Director of the Christian Muslim Forum, currently working as Connexional Grants Team Leader, previously seconded to the Archbishop of Canterbury's Initiative in Christian-Muslim Relations for two years from the Inland Revenue. Was one of the originators of the Christian Muslim Forum's leaders programme which has been encouraging influential Christians and Muslims to engage with each other at a local level.

Has engaged with the Muslim community around the country while also encouraging Christians to meet with Muslims both through the Christian Muslim Forum and as a member of the Methodist Church - member of The Square, Dunstable and previously District Inter Faith Advisor for Bedfordshire, Essex and Herts. His passion is for committed friendship and collaboration between Christians and Muslims.

Julian is a Theology graduate from the University of Aberystwyth and is keen to encourage wider dialogue with, and 'translate' religious ideas for, the non-religious. Currently writing a short book on 'Jesus our Role Model'.

Revd Clare Downing (co-chair)

Clare Downing is a URC minister and URC co-chair of the Methodist URC Inter Faith Relations Reference Group. After 8 years working in local churches in Leicester she moved into a Special Category Ministry post based at the St Philip's Centre for Study and Engagement in a Multi Faith Society, where her role included input on courses for a great range of people - Christians in local churches, police recruits, bishops... - along with broader training in the East Midlands Synod, especially in leadership and conflict resolution.

Since January 2011 she has been Moderator of the Wessex Synod of the URC - a role involving both the pastoral care of ministers and churches and working strategically to encourage mission across the region.

Peter is a United Reformed Church minister. He is presently the Secretary for Church Life and Inter Faith Relations at Churches Together in Britain and Ireland before which he was Deputy Director of the London Inter Faith Centre.
