Methodist receives BAFTA for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema

June Givanni, a leader at Walworth Methodist Church, received her BAFTA for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema for The June Givanni Pan African Cinema Archive (JGPACA).  She was handed the BAFTA at a ceremony that took place in London on the 18 February.

Ms Givanni’s work is centred on pan-African and Black British cinema and culture. The JGPACA is a personal collection of films, ephemera, manuscripts, publications, audio, photography and posters documenting pan-African cinema. This volunteer-run archive holds over 10,000 rare and unique artefacts collected over the past 40 years, making it one of the largest independent archives in the UK.

The BAFTA’s Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award is one of BAFTA’s highest accolades and a recognition of an individual or organisation that has made a significant and inspiring contribution to film through a particular project or work.

Ms Givanni worked as a film curator on five continents. notably, she co-ordinated the Greater London Council's Third Eye Film Festival in 1983 and created and was responsible for managing the African Caribbean Unit at the British Film Institute (BFI).
