Churches welcome call for benefit sanctions review

A coalition of major UK Churches, with a combined membership of more than 800,000 people, has welcomed the call for a full independent review of the benefit sanctions system. The recommendation comes in a report from the Work and Pensions Select Committee that has been released today.

An unprecedented 107 nations have signed a pledge to "stigmatise, prohibit and eliminate nuclear weapons in light of their unacceptable humanitarian consequences and associated risks" at the Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in New York. Four major UK Churches have welcomed the news, but called on the UK Government to unblock discussion of new multilateral disarmament initiatives.
