New website looks forward to Wesley's 300th birthday

A new website which looks forward to the 300th anniversary ofthe birth of John Wesley has been launched this week. The renownedpreacher and minister was born in Epworth, Lincolnshire, in June1703.

The site features a brief introduction to the life and times ofJohn Wesley and his involvement in the 'Methodist revival' of the18th century. It was Wesley's efforts that became the roots ofMethodism, today a worldwide Church that numbers more than 70million people.

A series of celebration events and conferences are being plannedduring the anniversary year in 2003. These include a majorecumenical service at Lincoln Cathedral and an internationalacademic conference at Manchester University. The new website willcarry information about these and other events as they areplanned.

Website editor Murray White said: "This 300th anniversary willbe a time to pause and reflect on the significant impact that JohnWesley had on the Christian story. It is an opportunity for theMethodist Church to celebrate Wesley's legacy and the new websitewill be an important way of announcing the many events in Britainand elsewhere that are expected to take place."
