Addressing food poverty one community at a time, Kensal Rise Methodist Church's inspiring initiative

Kensal Rise Methodist Church in London is taking a proactive approach to combating food poverty in their community. The church has implemented an innovative food-sharing program that provides nutritious meals to those in need, while fostering a sense of community and belonging.

The idea for this initiative began when Revd Esther Akam joined Kensal Rise Methodist Church in the London Methodist District where she witnessed a similar project at a nearby Co-op. Inspired by this model, Esther shared the idea with the congregation and immediately embraced it.

“Each week, we started with paying £5 to buy food in bulk and sharing it. Then the Co-Op gave us food surplus foods,” remembers Esther. She rallied her congregation to apply to the Felix Project, a local organisation that redistributes surplus food from supermarkets, farms and other sources to charities and community groups.

A streamlined process, a profound impact

Every Saturday, a dedicated team from the church collects donated food items from the Felix Project. As James, one of the team members, describes, "We pack the food into the van and bring it to the church. We store it in the back room, getting ready for Sunday when we distribute it to the members and the community."

The impact of the program has been remarkable:

"Since we started this food project, many people have told me they have not needed to find the money for food shopping. And some have big families. So I can see how much impact the project has."

A blessing for the entire community

While the primary goal is to alleviate food insecurity, the church's efforts have rippled through the community in unexpected ways. Teresa, a church member, explains, "If you go up on a Sunday and take some of the food available, then the money that you're saving can be used to bless somebody else, or used in a different way to create another blessing for someone."

The project has fostered a deep sense of community and connection. As Catherine, a church member, notes, "If you had been here from the beginning, you will know that the attendance has increased. More people come to join the service and not solely at the end when the food is served."

A lasting legacy

As the demand for the church's food-sharing program continues to grow, Esther and her team remain committed to expanding their efforts. With plans to acquire a larger van and to secure more donations, they are determined to ensure that no one in their community goes hungry.

"Sister Esther has been instrumental in making so many different changes for the good of the church, including getting the community involved. We have been very pleased to have her and to see the progress she's been making to the life of the church and the community."

Oswald, member of the church since 1961.

In a world where food insecurity remains a pressing issue, initiatives like these are not only nourishing bodies but also nurturing spirits and bringing communities closer together. Through their unwavering dedication and compassion, Kensal Rise Methodist Church serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us that small acts of kindness can create ripples of positive change.
