Why are you at 3Generate?

DJ Jozzy

By attending events like 3Generate, I get a chance to be a youth worker and also an artist who loves music. It is an opportunity to showcase my skills and hopefully pass on the torch. We love this event because it's very techy and engaging. We do silent disco workshops and teach young people how to DJ.

I spent all my childhood going to Methodist church, but I learned to love different churches. As a Christian artist, I tend to meet different people, so I like getting a little bit of this from the Methodists and the Pentecostals, for instance. I'm a person who likes to get a little bit from every denomination and explore.

Events like 3Generate are safe spaces for children. They can participate in several activities such as tech workshops, football, climbing or exploring their relationship with Jesus. It allows children to thrive and it is a healthy way for them to grow and develop.

I come from a Baptist church, but my mum and dad sang in a choir in Methodist churches. So I grew up going to both churches. I don't really see too much of a difference: everyone loves Jesus and everyone's got a real heart for their community and for supporting other people.

How does your faith intersect with your work?

DJ Jozzy

Music is a very powerful tool. Good music is out there, but not necessarily inspiring or with a positive message. Many songs are about degrading women and taking drugs. Our mission is to show young people that you can be a Christian and a DJ, and it doesn't mean you have to play derogatory songs. We are trying to make a difference through what we teach young people and show them that clean music is just as fun. It's just as good.

It's a form of counterculture that aims to change the culture through positive messages. We hold ourselves to a certain standard of morality, whether it's in music or in lyrics or through teaching people a decent way to behave. I think that it's through positive messages that we offer good examples and that we can change.

Do you often do this kind of event and what does it bring you?

DJ Harvey

We go to quite a few of these events—Jozzy, more than me. A secular set feeds on your pride; you're the one on stage, and you're away from everyone. Events like 3Generate have more of a community and collaborative feeling. We’re with everybody, chatting with people, and receiving a lot of feedback.

It’s my first time here and I am blown away by the amount of effort, customization and work that has gone into making this a truly amazing event.

How do children and young people react to your workshops?

DJ Jozzy

Young people love DJing. They love music. They engage with us very well because they're intrigued and want to learn how to play decks. We love it, because we get to help young people have a taste of what DJing is like and, you never know, some of them might become musicians.
