MCB World Mission Fund supports flood disaster relief in Sri Lanka
In 2024, Sri Lanka has faced intensified climate impacts, including frequent floods, droughts, and landslides, severely affecting agriculture, and extreme weather in October has resulted in an unprecedented natural disaster. Heavy rainfall, flooding and strong winds due to monsoon rains have caused widespread devastation in more than half of the country, particularly affecting the central and southern regions, including Colombo, Kalutara, Gampaha, Ratnapura, and especially Matara. The flooding has led to significant displacement, with thousands of people evacuated from their homes. Infrastructure damage, including roads and bridges, has hindered relief efforts, while agricultural areas have been impacted, raising concerns about food security. The National Christian Council of Sri Lanka is working to provide immediate relief to the most vulnerable families; estate workers, rural farmers and urban poor.
The World Mission Fund has agreed a grant of £15,000 to provide relief for the most vulnerable from over 40,000 families who have been impacted. This is enabling NCCSL to provide temporary shelter for displaced individuals and families, ensuring immediate access to food supplies for vulnerable families and children, while also implementing initiatives to support local livelihood and agricultural recovery. Essential supplies, including food, water, medical aid and hygiene kits, are being delivered to affected communities, and a Community Engagement programme is being set up to involve local communities in the relief efforts, ensuring that community volunteers are mobilized for distribution and support activities.
Please continue to pray for the work of the churches in Sri Lanka and for all that they are doing to help alleviate suffering.
