Prayer for Zambia drought victims

Jeremiah 14: 1-6 & 22

When there had been no rain for a long time, the Lord told me to say to the people: Judah and Jerusalem weep as the land dries up. Rulers send their servants   to the storage pits for water. But there’s none to be found; they return in despair with their jars still empty.africa-zambia-drought There has been no rain, and farmers feel sick as they watch cracks appear in the dry ground. A deer gives birth in a field, then abandons her new born fawn and leaves in search of grass. Wild donkeys go blind from starvation. So they stand on barren hilltops and sniff the air, hoping to smell green grass.

22 Idols can’t send rain, and showers don’t fall by themselves. Only you control the rain, so we put our trust in you, the Lord our God.

In response to the drought in Zambia, a solidarity grant has been given to our partner, the United Church of Zambia from the World Mission Fund for £10,000.  This is part of our ongoing support, please continue to keep Zambia in your prayers.  Olubunmi Olayisade, Partnership Coordinator for Africa has written  the below prayer for the situation in Zambia at this time.

Prayer

Tender Father,

We remember our Zambian brothers and sisters, especially the drought victims affected by the lack of rain for a protracted period. Just like the Israelites of old, many starve and require clean water. Numerous livestock go hungry, hoping for green grass. Several live in despair, with no livelihood. In spite of this hardship, we look to you, God of all flesh, able to control the rain. Together we put our trust in you, believing only you can send the showers. We ask for sufficient resources to provide food for the hungry, water for those thirsty and seeds for sowers. Dear God, you will always rule. You listen to the longings of those who suffer. You offer them hope, and you pay attention to their cries for help. To you be honour, glory and power as we pray in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Amen.
