Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word that you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new commandment that is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. Whoever says, 'I am in the light', while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness. Whoever loves a brother or sister lives in the light, and in such a person there is no cause for stumbling. (vs 7-10)

God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. (vs 5-7)

We declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. (v. 3)

Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptised by him. John would have prevented him, saying, ‘I need to be baptised by you, and do you come to me?’ But Jesus answered him, ‘Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.’ Then he consented. (vs 13-15)

The glory of the Lord filled the temple. (v. 5b)

When they saw the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed by joy. (v. 10)

'The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.' (v. 14)

'I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.' (v. 6)

'Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation.' (v. 3)

And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ (v. 6)

And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. (v. 14).

'... but join with me in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace.' (vs 8-9)
