"Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice in so far as you are sharing Christ's sufferings, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed." (v.12-13)
Background
In this passage, the author is writing to Christians who havesuffered persecution. He tells them that things would no longer bethe same because everything in the world was about to come to anend. They were encouraged to be focused in their faith,self-controlled and not give in to excess behaviour, as others haddone. The author encourages them to pray, which shows howsignificant prayer was to the early Church at that time.
Christians should show intense, real and purposeful love toeverybody regardless of culture, race or position in life. Loveintentionally and unconditionally like Christ loved, for Christforgave all wrongdoing. Despite what happens to them, Christiansare commanded to love.
"Love is a force that changes everything in its path.
Love is kind even when it has been wounded.
Love does not keep scores of wrong doing.
Love is a debt, it does not ask for payback.
Love is the emblem of true Christianity."

The Christians were told to share whatever talents and gifts theyhad with others according to the ability God had given them. Thisincluded personal wealth and resources. This is still seen incertain cultures today, particularly in times of crises.
The writer of the letter tells them not to be surprised at thepainful trials they were facing, even though it would feel strangeand uncomfortable. They were encouraged instead to rejoice in themidst of it, because Christ experienced the same. The glory of Godwas expected to be revealed at the end of it.
A relationship with Christ today does not spare one from trials andtribulations, needs and mockery, but the final outcome is a testedand refined Christian who has experienced the mercy, love and powerof God.
