Bible Book:
Deuteronomy

"For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with flowing streams, with springs and underground waters welling up in the valleys and hills." (v.7)

Deuteronomy 8:1-10 Monday 4 August 2008

Background

Here is a reminder to the people of God (the Israelites) of theways in which God has cared for them in the past. It reminds themthat if God has done this since the beginning of their history Godcan, and will, do it in the future.

The book of Deuteronomy was found in the Temple in Jerusalem duringthe reign of King Josiah in 621BC. It contains the laws ofLeviticus and Numbers, but in more detail. The name Deuteronomycomes from Greek words meaning the 'second law'. The major theme ofthe book is the right way to live in the promised land. There arefrequent reminders not to forget the grace of God that has broughtthe people freedom from slavery in Egypt.

The Israelites had been wandering in the desert for 40 years andthey were uncertain of where they would end up. Moses told them ofthe marvellous promised land, full of flowing streams and plentifulfood. It gave them hope to help them carry on travelling.

At this time of year many people are going on holiday to new placesand seeing new things just as the Israelites did. It is a time forrefreshment and renewal after hard work. The hope of the holidaykeeps them going through the working year.

To Ponder

Do you remember to look for God in new places andgive thanks for God's grace in bringing you there? Where have thesenew places been for you? What did you find there?

What kind of reminders do you need to reassureyourself that God is always with you?
