Psalm: Psalm 96:1-10

Background

The book of Hebrews offers some of the scriptures' richest images of Jesus. In this section alone we are given a glimpse of Jesus as pioneer (v. 10), family member (vs.11-12), liberator (v. 14) and high priest (v. 17). The writer weaves this rich tapestry as they attempt to explain to us the importance of the incarnation (Jesus coming as flesh and blood).

These images give us different ways of looking at Jesus and his purpose on earth:

Pioneer – From an old French word for foot soldier. These were the people sent into battle first. In more modern terms, a pioneer heads out into the unknown to make a way, space or place for others. Jesus came to make a way for us to follow.

Family – in Jesus’ day family was really important. Family trees went way back to ensure people knew you were from the right tribe or nation. Here we are reassured that we are part of that family even if our family trees don’t match up. We are Christ’s sisters and brothers, adopted into his family.

Liberator – As mentioned in yesterdays passage that alluded to the Exodus. God hears the cry of his people and frees them from oppression. Jesus came to free us from that which has bound us. As the writer of Hebrews states, "through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death."

High Priest – This image is used throughout Hebrews and takes us back again to the Old Testament and the stories of the Exodus as the people journey in the wilderness. Jesus is our great high priest and also the ultimate sacrifice made for us. Through his life, death and resurrection we are set free.
