"Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is." (3:2)
Background
A revelation can be experienced as a bulb lighting up a darkroom in a house. If we take the time, we are able to see who we arein the given moment and live in that moment, which is often harderto do than it sounds. But often in the present we can spend a lotof time worrying about the future or dwelling on the past. John'swords in chapter 3 of his first letter are indicative of this: wecannot know what is not yet known, but we can anticipate what iscoming. We do not know what we will be, but we can know what weare.
And we can have hope, as John says, "And all who have this hope inhim purify themselves, just as he is pure." John's hope is that wewill find God in ourselves, for he says that when God is revealed,we will be like God and see God for who God is.
