- Bible Book:
- 1 John
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. (v. 13)
Background
"Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine!" These opening words of the much loved hymn express something similar to John in his closing remarks in his letter. There is a confidence in that which God is doing in Jesus and our ability to understand and know our part within it.
If you are like me though, and you are honest about your faith, you will know that confidence fluctuates. There are times where I can sing this hymn and read these words and they resonate deep inside. There are other times when they can make me feel a fraud.
It is in these moments that I have to remind myself that my 'salvation' isn’t about the things I do and don’t do. My hope and life is rooted in Jesus and what he has done for me. There are times when I am able to live out some of the things we have touched on during this week: that my actions express my faith in the world; and that my love is based on that which I see in Jesus and in God. But there are times where I fall short. But the confidence I lack is in myself, and not in the God who created all things.
To Ponder:
- What is your favourite hymn or song that expresses your faith?
- Where would you say you are with your faith today?
