Bible Book:
2 Timothy

'... but join with me in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace.' (vs 8-9)

2 Timothy 1:8-10  Saturday 31 December 2022

Psalm 96:11-13

Background

Today we are reading one of Paul’s pastoral letters. Paul was imprisoned and probably close to the end of his life. He knew that in all likelihood he would be put to death because of his work in service to Christ.

Paul is giving fervent advice to the church leader Timothy. The teaching which has been entrusted to Timothy must be passed on faithfully and courageously to others.

In verse 8, Paul says Timothy joins him in suffering for the gospel. We know Timothy suffered imprisonment (Hebrews 13:23).

Paul is encouraging Timothy, like himself, to put up with suffering in order that others may receive the gospel. He must not hide his calling in shame. He exhorts Timothy to rely on the power of God. God has chosen Timothy, not because of any special qualities, or because of what he has achieved, but simply because God freely chooses to work in and through Timothy in grace. This grace has always been present but is now revealed through Christ who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

Scholars think that verses 9 and 10 are remnants from an Early Church liturgy.

To Ponder:

    • Can you remember a time of suffering for yourself or for someone else when you were able to rely on the power of God? How did you experience God’s power, and how did it make a difference?
    • Have you ever been painfully aware of your inadequacies and limited resources and realised that this is no hindrance to God’s grace?
    • Have you ever chosen to suffer for what you believed was 'a kingdom value'? Recall when and how.

Prayer

Loving God, thank you that in your grace you can use us, warts and all. May we learn to rely on the sufficiency of your grace in all situations. Amen.
