Bible Book:
John

He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognise him. (v. 10)

John 1:10-18 Sunday 3 January 2021

Psalm 147

Background

May I start by wishing you all a happy and healthy New Year!

It is perhaps fitting, given the year that we have just had, that we start 2021 by recalling the Light of the World who came to live among us, to share our human existence, and to show us what life should be like and what it can be like. At this time of year, many reflect on the year that has past as well as look to the year that has just begun. Janus the Roman god, from whom we get the name for January, had two faces one looking backwards and one forwards – so it is fitting that as we begin 2021 we reflect on what has been and what may be. It is also a time of year when in the Methodist Church and other denominations we celebrate the Covenant Service as we give ourselves once again into the service of God and our communities.

"Though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him." (John 1:10 NIV)  Perhaps as we step out into this new year with high  hopes and expectations, it is worth remembering that even Jesus was misunderstood and his words were misconstrued, as we too may find ourselves in the same situation. We need to remember however that we have a God who calls us to follow and then journeys with us. We are never alone, even when things seem at their darkest or most difficult: the Light of the World is always with us.

To Ponder:

  • What are you reflecting on at the turn of the year, and what are you looking forward to?
  • In what ways may you allow the light of God’s love and presence to shine through your life and living?
