- Bible Book:
- Luke
Then he said, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.' He replied, 'Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.' (vs 42-43)
Background
Today is ‘stir up Sunday’ when, according to folklore, the collect in the prayer book for the Church of England reminded cooks to begin preparing for the festive season that was fast approaching. ("Stir up O lord the wills of your faithful people.")
Christmas excitement is building, so why do we find ourselves considering the crucifixion of Christ today as we plan food and festivities?
There is a saying that "the manger always stands in the shadow of the Cross". Perhaps as we prepare for Advent – a time of reflection – it is right to begin at the trauma of what God has done for each of us as we prepare to consider the wonder of God coming among us.
It is right to consider how, even in the depth of human cruelty and in great pain and distress, Jesus still chose to reach out and change the life of a man suffering the same dreadful death as himself. In the Cross and the forgiveness of Christ we see the great compassion, grace, love and understanding of God, as expressed in Jesus' response: "Today you will be with me in paradise." (v. 43)
As we look towards Advent and its sense of anticipation and reflection, it is perhaps not a bad thing to look again at the God who is present with us and all that means for our lives and our living.
To Ponder:
- What does the season of Advent mean to you?
- How does the idea of "the manger standing in the shadow of the Cross" resonate with you?
Prayer
Lord, as we approach this time of reflection, stir up our hearts and lives to see and meet you each and every day and within each encounter with others. Amen.
