Bible Book:
John

"Jesus said to them, 'My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work.'" (v. 34)

John 4:5-42 Sunday 27 March 2011

Background

This week the readings hover between repentance and obedience:on one hand calling us to obedient living, and on the otherremonstrating with us for our inability to follow God's commands.Today's story of the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well fits perfectlywithin a Gospel written to persuade all who read it that this isthe story of Christ, sent from God to complete God's saving work ofgrace. Here is a life that is irrevocably changed by faith inJesus.

Jesus came to earth to transform lives. This is grace, freely givenand available to everyone, even those who are traditionally seen asoutcasts from 'polite society'. Sometimes we find it hard to accepthow amazing grace really can be. Even when we have made the worstof mistakes and are scarred from falling, God lifts us up, heals usand leads us forward. The Samaritan woman had lived a life whichwas utterly unacceptable in her culture, but Jesus still touchedher life with love. It is by love that we can be transformed.

To Ponder

How can we share the message of transforminggrace to those who feel least welcome in our Churchcommunities?

Do you think that it is possible to share theunconditional love of God if we cannot offer unconditional welcometo those we meet? Why? Or why not?

There are many ways that grace can transform yourlife. How far are you willing to surrender to grace and allow Jesusto finish God's work in you?
