- Bible Book:
- Genesis
"Then Joseph could no longer control himself before all those who stood by him, and he cried out, 'Send everyone away from me.' So no one stayed with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers. And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard it. Joseph said to his brothers, 'I am Joseph. Is my father still alive?'" (45:1-3)
Background
In view of all that has gone before, it is amazing that thisdramatic story develops without the brothers recognising Joseph, orJoseph disclosing himself to his family.
It is useful to read the chapter leading up to today's reading. Itreveals how often family relationships become so dysfunctional thatunnecessary hurt continues to be generated, whilst at the sametime, those affected want to resolve it. Joseph wants to, but forsome reason resists telling his family who he is. His brothers areafraid of this man who on the one hand appears to be offering themspecial treatment, whilst on the other appears to be finding waysto trap and enslave them. It is obvious that someone needs to takea step towards reconciliation and Joseph is the one who doesit.
"And now do not be distressed, or angry with yourselves, becauseyou sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life," hedeclares (Genesis 45:5). The turning point that made the steptowards reconciliation was the realisation, on Joseph's part, thatGod had acted to preserve God's people.
To Ponder
What are some of the factors that destroy familyrelationships today? Can you see any of those in the lives ofJoseph and his brothers?
'Do not blame yourselves.' To what extent do youthink it is easier to say this to others than to accept it forourselves?
