‘… how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!’ (v. 11b)
Background
What exactly is a good gift? My dad knew exactly what was a good gift for this son of his. I well remember opening the large box on my eighth birthday that contained the gift of his electric train set, which he had been given in 1944 on his eighth birthday. It was a three rail Hornby Dublo set, which worked then and still works now. Subsequent gifts often took the shape of difficult-to-obtain track or rail stock. He was a good father who knew a good gift, and it was always given with love and understanding.
When Jesus says, "Ask and it will be given you," he also relates that our good Father God will only give what is good for us because we are loved and the God who created us in our mother’s womb (see Psalm 139) not only loves us but understands what is good for us and will give only that.
If you imagine a world in which we all give to others in this way, you will imagine God’s kingdom come among us.
To Ponder:
- What do you need to offer to someone today to show them that you understand and care for them?
- Do you need to alter your way of praying to allow God’s gifts and answers to replace your desires?
