Further information

An interesting query about verse 4 suggests that a little clarification might be helpful.

The word "poor" in line 4 should not be read as an adjective but as a noun. The idea here is that in the poor of the world (by the very fact of their presence and suffering) God/Christ is still wronged and affronted by our personal actions and social policies. Indeed, Alan Gaunt makes the point vividly by suggesting that Jesus continues to be crucified by our attitudes towards the vulnerable and marginalised among us.

For this reason, we must continue to ask for forgiveness (line 5) and work towards the destruction of "all that hinders peace and justice" (line 7).

God, who made the stars of heaven (StF 7)
Hail! Holy, holy, holy Lord! (StF 9)
