Ideas for use
If you have enough people to do this, try sharing the verse lines out between different groups in the congregation (choir/soloists/men/women/back rows-front rows/left and right sides of the congregation etc.); everybody joining together for the Alleluias.
The responsive nature of the text also lends itself to being used as a spoken prayer e.g.
One voice: Praise the Lord, his glories show,
All: Alleluia!
Second voice: saints within his courts below,
All: Alleluia!
etc.
More information
Henry Lyte was born in Ednam in the Scottish Borders in 1873 and was educated in Ireland. Originally he intended to pursue medicine but decided instead that the ministry was “a worthwhile profession”. He served as a curate in Ireland and later in Cornwall and Hampshire before moving to Lower Brixham. Other of his hymns include Abide with me (StF 141) and Praise, my soul, the King of heaven (StF 83).
