4th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Hymns marked with an asterisk (*) are suggested for more than one reading

Today is Candlemas, which marks 40 days since Christmas. This period (‘Old Christmas’) is equivalent to the 40 days of Lent. On Candlemas, Christians recall the presentation of the baby Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem by his parents, Mary and Joseph. (This despite the quirk of our Lectionary regime of readings that has already launched Jesus into his adulthood and ministry.) Read more about Candlemas, and suggested hymns, at Marking Candlemas.

February also marks 20 years of LGBT+ History Month in the UK. It takes as its theme this year ‘Activism and Social Change’ and highlights five LGBT+ historical figures:

  • Octavia Hill
  • Ivor Cummings
  • Annie Kenney
  • Charlie Kiss
  • Olaudah Equiano
