A webinar on the topic of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) will be held on Thursday 23 May 10.30 am to 12.00 pm.

FGM is one of the harmful traditional practices that comes under the gender based violence umbrella. Over 200 million women and girls across the world are affected with approximately 3 million more at risk each year.

It used to be seen (incorrectly) as primarily an ‘African problem’. However with the effects of global migration, international opportunities for study, war and refugee crises, this is no longer the case.

The effects of genital mutilation on a woman can be lifelong - chronic pain, psychological trauma and infection with blood borne viruses to name but three.

Our churches include a number of women and girls from communities where FGM is a common cultural practice. This is a serious matter and there is legislation in place which has outlawed this practice in the UK.

It is important to raise awareness of FGM in order to help safeguard all in our church communities. This webinar provides an ideal opportunity to learn more.

The presenter Vickie Davitt has been a midwife for over 30 years and has been the lead midwife for Gender Based Violence for 9 years. Vickie works with women who are survivors of FGM and other forms of abuse.
